Advice for managing your migraines

Looking for a more effective way to manage your migraines? We know it can be tough. However, by taking the following steps, you can make it easier.

Keep a migraine diary

Keeping a migraine diary can help you make a note of everything that happened before and during a migraine. These notes can include anything, from what you ate to the weather. By noting these things in your migraine diary, you and your doctor can find out what your migraine triggers are likely to be. Your migraine diary will also allow you and your doctor to find patterns and see if there may be better ways to manage your migraines.

Keeping a regular sleep schedule

Are you going to bed at different times? Sleeping late some mornings? Then maybe it is time to take a look at your sleep habits. Sleeping too much or too little can cause a migraine. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help reduce the number of migraines you get.

Be aware of what you eat and drink

There are lots of migraine triggers. Some of the most common ones are foods and drinks that you may have taken for granted in the past. They include aged cheese (such as cheddar), red wine, and caffeine. While you may know your food triggers, it is always best to be aware of what other foods and drinks can trigger migraines. And remember, if you get a migraine, make a note in your migraine diary of what you ate and drank just before the migraine attack.

Eat regularly

Fasting or skipping meals is a known cause of migraines in many people. So make sure you eat at regular times during the day, plus a little snack in between.

Reduce your stress

Stress can have a powerful effect on the body. Many people get migraines after a stressful event. While you may not be able to control these events, you can help undo the stress they cause. Working out, even walking can help reduce stress. Another way to reduce stress is yoga. Yoga combines relaxation and breathing techniques with exercise. By doing so, yoga may reduce stress.

You can also try biofeedback, or a variety of other relaxation techniques. Biofeedback helps you use your mind to take control of your body's normal functions. As a result, biofeedback can help you to relax.

Always talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program or changing your eating habits.

Important safety information

RELPAX is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Only your doctor can decide if RELPAX is right for you.

RELPAX should be taken as a single 40-mg tablet. If needed, and as directed by your healthcare professional, an additional 40-mg tablet can be taken at least 2 hours later. No more than two 40-mg tablets should be taken in any 24-hour period.

Most common side effects are dizziness, nausea, weakness, feeling sleepy, pain or pressure sensation in the chest or throat. Tell your doctor about any side effects you have.

If you have certain types of heart disease, a history of stroke, TIA, or uncontrolled blood pressure, you should not take RELPAX. Very rarely, certain people, even some without heart disease, have had serious heart-related problems. Talk to your doctor if you have risk factors for heart disease such as smoking, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, or if you are pregnant or nursing.

RELPAX, as with other drugs in its class (triptans), can cause serotonin syndrome, particularly when used with certain medications (SSRIs and SNRIs) commonly used to treat depression.

RELPAX should not be used within at least 72 hours of treatment with the following medicines: Nizoral®, Sporanox®, Serzone®, TAO®, Biaxin®, Norvir®, and Viracept®.
